Puppy Love
The raging debate in my home this week, is to adopt a puppy or not? Before I get all the dog people on my case, let me get it out of the way, I love dogs!
Years ago before baby number two, while our son was growing, and growing all alone with no siblings, we discussed adopting a puppy. For our son to have company and someone to share happy memories with. That discussion got shelved, when I got pregnant with our daughter.
Five years later, the debate is back in full force. My husband seems to think it will teach our teenager responsibility and our five year old to stop fearing animals. It is a noble thought and a fantastic idea. The truth is, I am against us getting a new family member, one that never grows and needs constant attention.
We live in a desert, we have two seasons hot and hotter. A dog cannot stay outside for long periods of time. We lead busy lives, a dog should have company and affection for a big part of the day. Our teenager is occupied with academics, athletics, and his social life. In other words, he will not be much help. Our five year old is terrified of dogs, how long will it take her to warm up to one in the house? The husband works long hours and travels for his job, he will not be around to guide, care, or be responsible for this dog. We travel two to three times a year, with nowhere to leave our precious cargo. So, yours truly will have the additional fun of looking after the need of one more being and the logistics of homing our puppy while we are gone.
Admittedly a little blackmail was used, a puppy was brought home for the kids to "check out", he had a cute face and demeanor. Persuasive methods attempted, some begging was utilized, a drama or two enacted, as of this writing we are still at an impasse. No final decision has been made, I hope it keeps leaning towards no pets for now.
Here is what I have learned: I do love dogs and once upon a time, would have jumped at the chance to live with one. After four countries, two children eight years apart, sick and dying parents, job loss, going home for extended periods of time, and generally crazy life, I can do with one less thing on my plate.
